VW has revealed the headlines on their latest sporty creation: the new Polo GTI. The new version of the already award-winning hatchback uses turbo- and supercharging.
It is set for a Geneva unveiling as the show starts in a few weeks time. The details seem to reveal a rather tasty all-rounder: a practical, economical yet fast and fun to drive car.
By taking a look at the engine (or at least at some numbers coming out of it) you realize that VW have pulled a rather neat trick. It might only be a 1.4-litre TSI petrol but it has a turbo- and a supercharger. That means it will put out 180 bhp and an impressive 250 Newton-metres of torque. Fuel consumption is top-notch as the GTI Polo requires 5.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres.
Low weight is a key factor in making the car fun to drive yet economical and we are speaking about 1,194 kgs here. As a result, 0-100 km/h takes only 6.9 seconds and the top speed is 229 km/h. But low weight also means that the eco-mentalists will be happy too with the friendly 139 g/km of CO2 coming out of the exhaust pipes.
The sporty character of the car is further defined by the lowered ride height (15mm lower than a normal Polo), the traditional GTi seats, 17-inch allow wheels and, of course, the red stripes. To keep the power going to the right place at the front, VW have fitted it with their XDS electronic differential which they say has been developed to work along with the ESP system to keep grip at its maximum.
The first Polo GTIs will arrive at the end of May in Germany and across Europe and Japan afterwards for about 20,500 euros.
